Visit Uzès
Home

Uzès, first Duchy of France, offers many small and narrow medieval streets at the footstep of the Duchy castle where live, since 1000 years, the Cressol family of Uzès.
Wealthy private mansions from the XVII and XVIII century, Renaissance facades, Cathedral, The Campanile Roman tower, the Medieval garden, the Gallo-Roman Aqueduct etc... invites visitors to go back in history.

Meubles Peints
------------

A long time ago, Uzès was a place where decorated furniture artisans met:  the famous dressers (armoires) of Uzès are today unique and very demanded.
Since then, Uzès became the hub for decorated furniture. Every other year during the Ascension weekend, the city organizes a fair called "La Biennale du meuble et Décor Peint" which offers a wide selection of artist and artisan exhibitions inside the Duchy of Uzès and Uzès City Hall.

Garden ...
------

At spring, Uzès is blooming with colors and perfumes with the Garden of South, the Roses festival and the citrus fruits fair...

... & Medieval Garden
--------------

At the footstep of the Bishop Tower "La Tour de l'Evêque", in the courtyard on the way to the lord's jail, the medieval garden is an haven of peace and harmony: with its Garden of Simples, Garden of medical plants, Vegetable Garden, fountains and Wall Frescos.
Nice places to be with the sun shinning.

The Duchy Castel
--------------

The Duchy Castle standing-up as a fortress in the heart of the city was never attacked, which explains why it remains in such good conditions today.
From the Bermonde Tower the panoramic view of Uzès countryside is striking with: its valleys, vineyard hills, the outline of the Mountains of the Cévennes, the rocks of the Guarrigue in the Eure valley... and the ochre roofs of Uzès old buildings..

City of Huguenot influences and city of bishops, Uzès went through difficult time during the religious wars.
With its 10 churches, only the Cathedral St Théodorit with its Roman Campanile Tower, the St Etienne Church and the Temple remain. The churches along with other cultural places host several classical music concerts every year.

Interiors
------

Most of the XVII and XVIII century mansions with decorated façades are the witnesses of a wealthy and merchants city.
Casement windows, moulded frame doors, paved courtyard, equilateral arcades... all this take visitors back to the time of Cyrano de Bergerac... As a matter of fact, Roxana's mansion is located next to the Herbs Square "Place aux Herbes" (Some of the scenes of the movie "Cyrano de Bergerac" made by Jean-Paul Rappeneau were filmed in Uzès)..

Arches
-----

La Place aux Herbes, (the Herbs Square) animated every Saturday morning by the colorful farmers market, offers its arches to little boutiques and craft and to the terrace of cafés and restaurants.
A must see and be prepared to fall in love !!!

Mazets and capitelles

Dry Stones
--------

Beyond the border of Uzès, a little road crosses the county of the "Mazets" and the "Capitelles". Those little cottages made with dry stone called the "Capitelles" (At least 100 in Uzès County!) were used as olive storages or as shepherd’s shelters.
Today, the "Capitelles" became a place for hikers who enjoy the scenic countryside of "La Garrigue" and the cacophony of Cicadas.
